The S-Class continues as the flagship sedan of the Mercedes-Benz lineup and the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC is the pinnacle of that elite line, offering distinctive design elements, exclusive features and the finest luxury appointments. The S-Class has been redesigned for 2021 and the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 follows suit with a longer hood, flush door handles and two-piece horizontal taillights.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class adds exclusive Maybach design cues including a grille with Maybach lettering and vertical three-dimensional trim strips; a chrome trim strip in the center of the hood; and a unique front bumper design with black mesh or optional chrome mesh. Riding on a wheelbase 7 inches longer than the standard S-Class, the Maybach S-Class has longer rear doors, a more upright C-pillar and an illuminated Maybach emblems on those pillars. Exclusive 19-, 20- and 21-inch wheels are offered.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is offered with a choice of ten hand-painted two-tone paint combinations. For the two-tone paint process, the lower paint color is applied in the paint shop over the entire body, then the body shell is moved to a custom paint shop for the taping and hand painting of the upper paint color, including the painted dividing line. The painting process for the optional two-tone paints can take up to a week to complete.

The additional room created by the longer wheelbase of the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is all available in the rear seat area — expect to see a chauffeur in the driver’s seat of the Maybach S 580 more often than the owner. Exclusive Maybach Nappa leather upholstery is standard with Active Multicontour seats front and rear. In the rear area of the Maybach S-Class, executive seats form a cradle of luxury offering 10 massage programs, a leg rest with calf massage, a footrest and neck / shoulder heating. Rear-seat passengers also enjoy four-zone climate control, a Rear Energizing Comfort Package, an MBUX rear tablet, wireless headsets, as well as an MBUX high-end rear-seat entertainment system with two integrated high-resolution 11.6-inch touchscreens with full-HD camera and microphone.

The level of luxury in the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class seems limitless with a leather headliner and a large area of high-quality wood wrapping the rear of the front seats and also the center area between the rear seats when the vehicle contains the 4-seat Executive Rear Seat Plus package. For increased rear-seat room, both driver and rear-seat passenger can move the unoccupied front passenger seat forward, tilt the seatback forward and lower the headrest for better visibility. The interior is quieter thanks to active road noise compensation.

The available Executive Rear Seat Plus package has a four-seat configuration with a continuous electric rear center console, two folding tables, temperature controlled cupholders, an illuminated storage compartment with a 12V socket and wood trim with the Maybach emblem. Available electronically operated rear doors can be controlled by the rear-seat passenger or the driver.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class premieres adaptive rear lighting for interior occupants. The system responds to occupant input regarding brightness, the size and position of the illumination spot can be adjusted, including a wide adjustment range between precise working light and relaxing lounge light.

Even though the primary focus of the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 is the comfort and luxury of the rear seat, the driver and front-seat passenger benefit from all the new technology available for the new model. In front of the driver sits a new 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster that provides 3D warnings for the driver assistance systems, including a 3D display that provides a view of the vehicle surroundings with 3D images of cars, trucks, buses or motorcycles. The new steering wheel features capacitive touch control buttons.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class also receives an all-new 12.8-inch OLED center touchscreen for the MBUX infotainment and navigation system, positioned between the driver and front-seat passenger. The unit extends up from the center console in front of the dash — a departure from the previous model that configured the digital instrument cluster and MBUX screen as a single wide screen under a single hood.

The Maybach S 580 features the next-generation interactive MBUX system that can be operated via voice control, the center touchscreen and/or by touch control buttons on the steering wheel. The verbal cue “Hey Mercedes” wakes the system, which has learning capabilities and natural language understanding. When navigation is active, Augmented Video for Navigation displays a video image of the area; arrows or house numbers get superimposed over the image in the display. An Augmented Reality Head-Up Display projects images in the head-up display.

The Maybach S 580 4MATIC gets powered by a 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 engine producing 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, equipped with a 48-volt electrical system and an integrated starter-generator that provides EQ Boost and energy recovery. EQ Boost adds an additional 184 lb-ft of torque and 21 horsepower for short periods. Power delivery occurs through a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive. An additional Maybach mode for the Driver Select settings focuses on a smoother ride when chauffeur driven, starting the sedan in second gear and adopting low-shift transmission programming.

The Maybach S 580 employs rear-axle steering to improve agility and maneuverability. The system offers either 4.5 degrees of rear steering angle or 10 degrees of rear steering angle, depending on selected wheel / tire packages. When equipped with all-wheel steering and 10 degrees of rear steering angle, the turning radius of the Maybach S-Class is reduced by up to 7 feet for a turning radius of less than 36 feet.

The Maybach S-Class features AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable active ADS+ dampers as standard equipment. The 48-volt fully active E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL offers a wide range of handling characteristics that can be set through the Drive Mode control — from Comfort to Performance. The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL responds proactively to driving conditions based on settings selected by the driver. In Curve mode, the car actively leans into a corner to reduce the lateral load on the occupants.

In yet another first for Mercedes-Benz, the new Maybach S-Class offers frontal airbags for rear-seat passengers with an innovative tubular system that rapidly inflates and positions the airbags yet deploys them gently. During severe frontal collisions, the rear airbags can considerably reduce the impact on heads and necks of occupants in the outer rear seats.

The system uses speakerlike resonators featuring sound massage with surround speakers integrated into the seats.
