A few months ago, Porsche announced its new Panamera had completed one circuit of the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack in 7:29.81, breaking the record for E-segment vehicles previously held by Mercedes. Now Mercedes-AMG reclaims that lap record. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door achieved a time of 7:27.8 around the famed 12.944-mile circuit in Germany, making it the fastest four door in the Executive / Luxury vehicle class.

Driven by AMG development engineer Demian Shaffert, the Mercedes- AMG GT 63 S 4-Door features a number of tuning updates for the 2021 model year that helped this fast four door retake the track record. A former racing driver, Shaffert beat his 2018 lap record in a GT 4-Door by 2.3 seconds.

Demian Shaffert spent several years involved with the development of the AMG GT, and came away impressed at the range of the vehicle’s capabilities. “On the one hand, the four-door coupe is comfortable and equipped with many intelligent safety features for everyday driving, and on the other hand it offers this extremely high level of driving dynamics and precision, which we have now been able to demonstrate once again on the demanding Nordschleife,” said Shaffert.

The record time of 7:27.8 is the time recorded for the full 12.944 miles (20.832 kilometers) — many enthusiast publications and other OEMs show times for the 12.8 mile (20.6 kilometer) length, which measures from the start of the staging area to the end, omitting a few hundred meters of track. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door completed the shorter distance in a record time of 7:23.009. As required of any record, an independent notary certified the conditions of the vehicle and the lap time.
