Lamborghini Huracan STO: Track Ready, Street Legal

Lamborghini produces some of the most exotic and exciting sports cars on the road — and track. Now this Italian company takes a car built for the track and brings it to the street: the Huracan STO. Based on the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and GT3 EVO race cars, the Lamborghini Huracan STO delivers track-ready performance to public roads.

“The Huracan STO is the purest incarnation of Lamborghini Squadra Corse heritage, directly transferring technologies from the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and drawing on the Huracan GT3 EVO’s unique accomplishment of winning three consecutive times in the Daytona 24 hours,” said Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

A 5.2-liter normally aspirated V10 engine producing 640 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque looms directly behind the Huracan STO cabin. Power gets sent to the rear wheels via a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Lamborghini engineers calibrated the engine for a more responsive racing experience with improved sharpness at higher revs.

The Huracan STO is incredibly quick (not that there are any slow Lamborghinis). Zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 3 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) is passed six seconds later. With enough road or track, the STO’s top speed is listed at 193 mph.

Underscoring the Lamborghini Huracan STO’s overall performance is a lightweight structure featuring body panels constructed primarily from carbon fiber. Rear fenders utilize a carbon fiber sandwich technique that maintains the same rigidity with 25 percent less carbon fiber. The chassis is built from aluminum and carbon fiber, and even the windshield weight has been reduced by 20 percent. Overall, the STO weighs in about 95 pounds lighter than the Huracan Performante.

Engineers also mined Lamborghini racing experience for the Huracan STO’s brake setup. The Brembo CCM-R brake system features large ventilated and cross-drilled carbon-ceramic discs with 8-piston aluminum calipers in front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. Maximum braking is improved by 25 percent with four times higher thermal conductivity for consistent performance. The STO is able to stop from 100 km/h in less than 100 feet.

The impressive grip required to safely pilot the Lamborghini Huracan STO is provided by Bridgestone Potenza high-performance tires fitted to 20-inch lightweight magnesium rims.

The Lamborghini Huracan STO gets a more direct, fixed steering ratio designed for instant feedback from the road. With Lamborghini’s rear-wheel steering, increased wheel track, stiffer suspension and specific anti-roll bars, the STO is designed to provide the agility of a race car while delivering a comfortable ride on the road.

As important as power and weight are to a race car, aerodynamics play an equal role for improving performance. The hood, fenders and front bumper of the Lamborghini Huracan STO are a single component, with new air ducts that increase airflow for improved cooling and downforce generation. A new front splitter directs airflow beneath the vehicle toward the rear diffuser. Vents over the front wheels reduce pressure within the wheelwells, further increasing downforce at the front while reducing drag.

The rear fenders derived from the Super Trofeo EVO race car help reduce drag while increasing rear downforce. A NACA air intake brings cool air into the engine while an integrated shark fin improves stability. The large rear wing is easily adjusted to fit the driving conditions. When compared to the Performante, overall airflow efficiency for the Huracan STO has improved 37 percent with 53 percent more downforce.

The Lamborghini Huracan STO makes extensive use of carbon fiber throughout the cockpit, including door panels and full carbon fiber sport seats. Alcantara and Lamborghini’s Carbonskin add to the premium performance feel — even the floor mats are constructed from carbon fiber. In keeping with its race-proven pedigree, the STO has a roll bar and four-point seat belts. The front trunk has been specially designed for helmet storage.

“The Huracan STO delivers all the excitement of a beautifully balanced, lightweight and aerodynamically superior super sports car, mirroring the driving feeling and exhilaration of Super Trofeo, and perfectly set up for the world’s most demanding tracks but created for the road,” said Maurizio Reggiani, chief technical officer at Lamborghini. “The Huracan STO allow[s] the pilot to experience the emotions of a racing driver, daily, in a road-legal Lamborghini super sports car able to take lap records,” Reggiani noted.
