One of the most enduring and prestigious automotive events in the world, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance celebrates its 70th anniversary on Sunday August 15th. Every year on a Sunday in August, the 18th fairway in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach hosts many rare and significant cars from around the world in a judged competition that results in one car being named Best of Show. But on the Thursday prior to the prestigious event, many of those same vehicles take to the streets surrounding Carmel-by-the-Sea as well as the Pacific Coast Highway during the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance departs from Portola Road in Pebble Beach, parading in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach before heading south on 17-Mile Drive toward Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Tour joins scenic Highway One along the Pacific Ocean — a classic stretch of California highway with rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and amazing views west above the waves. The tour vehicles also cross historic Bixby Creek Bridge on the way to Big Sur before turning north and returning to Pebble Beach.

Tour d’Elegance participants who go the extra mile to put their concours cars on the road have a deep affinity with the automobile. They look forward to driving their cars on public roads during the tour, knowing that folks who appreciate automobiles will pause to experience these rare cars in motion. Tour entrants also know that participation in the event could pay off during Concours d’Elegance judging on Sunday — if two competitors tie for first in class, the tour participant will be given the nod to move on to final judging for Best of Show.

Upon successful arrival back at Pebble Beach, many Tour d’Elegance participants celebrate with a little champagne before a meticulous process begins: preparing their cars for the 18th fairway on Sunday morning and final judging in the 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In the intervening days, tour participants must return the cars to pristine show condition before intense scrutiny begins on August 15. Until then, let’s look at some of the amazing machines that cruised the tour route this year.
