With sales continuing to decline, Ford has plans to kill the Mercury brand, says a report by Bloomberg.com.
Company officials are expected to offer a proposal to the board of directors in July to kill the 71 year-old auto brand. ?With the loss of two of the four models scheduled for next year Mercury dealers will only have a limited supply of vehicles, making sales increases nearly impossible.
Ford has already sold off Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin in an effort to avoid bankruptcy and has agreed to sell Volvo to China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Co.
If the Ford board accepts the alleged proposal Mercury will join Pontiac, Saturn, Oldsmobile and Plymouth as another brand to bite the dust in the recent economic downturn.
