There appears to be a future for the Chrysler brand — and it’s electrifying. Embarking on a new journey under the Stellantis umbrella (last year’s merger of Fiat Chrysler and French PSA Group), the time-honored American brand debuted the Airflow Concept at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The big news accompanying the Chrysler Airflow concept’s introduction: Chrysler will become an all-electric vehicle brand by 2028, with the first battery-electric vehicle planned for 2025.

“The Chrysler Airflow Concept represents the future direction of the Chrysler brand, providing a peek at the dynamic design, advanced technologies and seamless connectivity that will characterize the full-electric portfolio we plan to reach by 2028,” said Chrysler Brand Chief Executive Officer at Stellantis Christine Feuell. “Chrysler is an iconic American automotive brand, with a heritage in creating new advanced technologies and product segments. Our brand will serve at the forefront as Stellantis transforms to deliver clean mobility and connected customer experiences,” Feuell noted.

With the vehicle name Airflow, Chrysler looks to the future by honoring a bit of the brand’s rich past. In the 1930s Chrysler introduced the Airflow as one of the first cars employing an aerodynamic design — at that time called “streamlining.” That car was not popular with the American public, although the Airflow was quite advanced for its time featuring lightweight construction methods, an automatic overdrive transmission and a raked safety glass windshield. The modern Airflow name fits well since the brand will now focus on slipstreaming into an all-electric future.

The Airflow Concept features a sleek design with a low ride height and wide track. Up front, extremely slim headlights flank a wide grille. The Chrysler Wing logo gets illuminated with crystal LED lighting.

Painted in Arctic White with a contrasting black roof, the Airflow Concept has a streamlined profile enhanced by a long wheelbase and large 22-inch wheels.

Bold rear fenders give the Airflow Concept a strong stance, further enhanced by an LED light bar that stretches across the full width of the car. The name AIRFLOW gets spelled out in large letters that light up at night. A spoiler mounted high on the rear hatch completes the streamlined look.

Powering the concept are two 150 kW (approximately 200 horsepower each) electric drive motors — one on each axle providing all-wheel drive. The electric motors are located at the far front and rear of the vehicle to maximize interior space, as well as allow for larger capacity motors in the future that will offer higher performance. Range is anticipated to be 350–400 miles on a single charge.

The electric powertrain of the Airflow allowed designers to create a spacious interior with the feeling of an open, roomy lounge enhanced by a large panoramic roof. Designed to be soothing and relaxing for occupants, the Airflow features comforting ambient lighting and supple leather-trimmed seats. All buttons and switches have been eliminated — except a centrally located start/stop button. Instead all vehicle technology is accessed via touchscreens or soft-touch controls located on the steering wheel.

The interior of the Airflow Concept takes advantage of sustainable materials, including vegetable-tanned leather as well as floor mats, fabric and carpeting all made from recycled materials.

Not only does the Airflow Concept represent the electrified future of the Chrysler brand, it also showcases a new level of user experience and personalization as part of the STLA SmartCockpit. The stylish and futuristic interior features a display screen for each seat. These displays provide a personalized space for each occupant with access to entertainment, apps and connected services acting as an extension of the home or work environment. Seats even have a built-in camera making it possible to video conference from the Airflow. The advanced system also allows any passenger to share information with all other displays in the vehicle.

Making this level of technology possible is a new electrical / electronic software architecture referred to as STLA Brain. This advanced system is less reliant on hardware, making it possible to improve services quickly and easily with over-the-air updates.

“The Chrysler Airflow Concept represents the start of the brand’s journey toward a completely electrified future. It is the result of a thoughtful synthesis of the full arsenal of Stellantis’ connected vehicle technology — inside and out,” said Ralph Gilles, Chief Design Officer at Stellantis. “The design features a decisively elegant aerodynamic exterior and a modern, sophisticated interior that takes the customer on a new level of digital delight,” Gilles observed.
