BMW Shows New Design Direction with 6-Series Coupe

The Paris Auto Show brought out big design changes for the Bavarian Motor Works top coupe that may redefine the brand?s future styling direction.

The BMW Concept 6-Series coupe took on a more traditional-look with a sexy design language moving away from the so-called Bangle-era look that dominated the brand?s cars for the last decade.? The signature wide twin-kidney grille is still there but now accented by distinctive LED headlights, a glass roof and massive 20-inch wheels.

Interior elements are dressed in soft two-tone leathers, elegant wood trim and glassy black accents.? The digital cluster features a big screen (10.2-inch) iDrive display and tunes are played through a 16-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system.

Engine offerings are still beneath a closed hood, but media speculation includes a 300-hp inline turbocharged six-cylinder, 400-hp 4.4-liter V-8 and down the road a 570-hp twin turbo V-8 for an M6 version.? Europeans will likely be offered a 3.0-liter turbo diesel, but it probably won?t be offered in the U.S. market. There is talk of an ActiveHybrid, too.

The coupe will get a full treatment of LED lighting in an effort to reduce electrical consumption when requires more fuel.? Seating is still a 2+2 configuration, which means room for two and things, rather than people in the rear.

Pricing is expected to stay close to the current model levels, which start at $79,000. The new BMW 6-Series coupe should arrive in the U.S. by mid-2011.
