Airstream Basecamp 20: Tiny Trailer Grows Up

Airstream is well known for building high-quality travel trailers with a distinct shape and shiny aluminum exterior — the reason they are called Silver Bullets. A a few years ago, the Ohio company introduced a new entry-level trailer that keeps the shiny skin but brings a new teardrop shape to the lineup — the Basecamp. Now the company expands the Basecamp line with the larger, more versatile Airstream Basecamp 20.

“This new, larger Basecamp 20 was born out of feedback that owners wanted more space, more flexibility, and the option to have separate spaces for eating and sleeping,” said Bob Wheeler CEO and President of Airstream. “We are proud of this latest add to our product offering that continues in the tradition of innovation that supports adventures,” Wheeler noted.

As the name indicates, the new Basecamp is 20 feet long. Not only is the new version longer than the standard Basecamp 16, it is also wider and taller. This new Basecamp variant has a reconfigured floorplan to skillfully accommodate a range of new features as well.

Working to maximize the additional space in the Basecamp 20, designers incorporated a front dinette that seats up to four, conveniently placed beneath the front panoramic windows. The dinette can be converted into a bed that sleeps two children or one adult. At the rear of the trailer, a larger dinette has two tables and multiple seating and lounging configurations. This dining area can also be folded into a large bed for two adults. The increased size of the Basecamp 20 also provides additional storage locations throughout the cabin.

Like the original Basecamp, the Basecamp 20 is equipped with a sink, a two-burner stove, a 4.3-cubic-foot refrigerator and plenty of storage for kitchenware and food. An optional microwave is also available.

In order to make the Basecamp 20 a proper home away from home, designers included a full bathroom with toilet, shower and sink. Adding to camper comfort is the standard furnace as well as an efficient tankless water heater. Air conditioning is also available.

Joining the Basecamp 16X, the 20X is designed for those who seek a bit more adventure. Ready to leave the beaten path, the Basecamp 20X features larger Goodyear DuraTrac off-road tires on stylish aluminum wheels. The Basecamp 20X has 12 inches of ground clearance (even when fully loaded), a stainless steel front stone guard, tinted window guards and a steel double step for easier access to the travel trailer, since it is higher off the ground.

While many bigger Airstream trailers require a large vehicle to function as a tow rig, the Basecamp 20 and 20X are relatively lightweight. With a maximum trailer weight of 4,300 pounds, these new Airstream models can easily be towed by most midsize and larger trucks, crossovers or SUVs.

The 2021 Airstream Basecamp 20 has a starting price of $45,900, while the Basecamp 20X bumps that figure to $48,900. Orders can be placed now with deliveries expected later this summer.
