Monterey Car Auctions Record
For more than 70 years, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance collector car show has drawn automotive enthusiasts to California’s Monterey Peninsula. Over the decades, other automotive events have germinated around the world-famous concours, blossoming into what is now known collectively as Monterey Car Week. Some of the most exciting events leading up to Sunday’s concours are the live auctions in Pebble Beach, Monterey and Carmel Valley. This year total auction sales reached $469 million — a new all-time record besting the 2015 total of $394.5 million by 18.9 percent. This year the top seller was a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti, which sold for $22 million at RM Sotheby’s. A record 112 cars sold for more than $1 million, compared with 82 that topped that mark last year.

Strong Sell Through, More Cars
Although this year the auctions’ combined sell-through rate dropped to 76 percent compared with 82 percent in 2021, it was still much stronger than the 59 percent rate in 2019. The 2022 auctions offered a total of 1,023 cars for sale — a 9 percent increase — and the average sale price increased to $583,211, compared with $446,042 in 2021. At the high end, prices were still below 2018 numbers, a year when three cars surpassed the $20 million mark; this year only one car reached that level, and only two cars sold for more than $10 million.
