2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Today Jeep revealed the fifth-generation 5-seat 2022 Grand Cherokee, following the 2021 Grand Cherokee L that debuted earlier in the year. The Grand Cherokee L offered a preview of this new Grand Cherokee as the first-ever 7-seat version of the popular Jeep model. With more than 7 million vehicles sold worldwide since its debut in 1992, Grand Cherokee has continued to be one of the top-selling models in the Jeep lineup. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has all-new architecture including a new exterior design, a new interior, upscale craftsmanship and new technology.
Grand Cherokee 4xe
Following the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, the 2022 Grand Cherokee adds a 4xe plug-in hybrid version combining two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission, and a Quadra Trac II 4WD system with a 2-speed transfer case. Total combined output for Grand Cherokee 4xe is 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and the estimated all-electric range is expected to be 25 miles. The GC 4xe will also have a fuel economy rating of 57 MPGe and a total range of 440 miles. Grand Cherokee 4xe is rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds.
Global Flagship
“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4 x 4 capability and electrification,” said Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer Christian Meunier. “With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4 x 4 capability and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious and 4 x 4-capable Grand Cherokee ever,” noted Meunier.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is no surprise since the Grand Cherokee L debuted last January, but the Grand Cherokee does have a different roofline and profile, sitting on a 5-inch-shorter wheelbase with the overall length 11.4 inches less than Grand Cherokee L. Like the Grand Cherokee L, the roofline is lower and tapered, while the beltline is also lower to allow doe more light and improved outward visibility. For the first time, Grand Cherokee offers a gloss black roof for upper trim levels.
Exterior Design
The iconic 7-slot grille of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is wider and larger, with a new front fascia designed to conceal the long-range radar and other high-tech components to support the new technology. The longer hood and wider track add to the SUV’s bold stance, and aerodynamic enhancements include active grille shutters, front-wheel spats and air curtains. Eight wheel options are offered on different trim levels, including 21-inch wheels for the first time. At the rear, Grand Cherokee features slim wraparound LED taillights and integrated exhaust outlets at the edges of the lower fascia to punctuate the wide stance.
Inner Space
Even more impressive than the exterior updates, the interior of the 2022 Grand Cherokee has a clean dashboard design, and horizontal vents underscore the vehicle’s impression of width and heft. A standard 10.1-inch display integrates seamlessly at the center, with a combination of digital and physical buttons for quick navigation. Climate control as well as volume and tuning knobs are within easy reach. A new rotary shifter as well as other drive controls for ride height and mode selection sit lower on the center console. First seen on Grand Wagoneer, a 10.25-inch front passenger interactive display is available, as well as a new high-definition rear-seat entertainment system with Fire TV.
Fire TV, McIntosh Audio
Available Fire TV allows passengers to stream videos, play games, listen to music, get information, and watch downloaded content while on the road. Front-seat controls allow the passenger to monitor content or apps being used in the rear seat, quickly start a movie on the rear displays as well as pause or stop the content on rear displays. The available state-of-the-art McIntosh audio system features 19 custom-designed speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer, 950-watts of power and a 17-channel amplifier. The Jeep brand is currently the only automotive manufacturer to offer a McIntosh sound system.
Model Lineup
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be offered in seven trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve with the standard Pentastar V6 engine. A 5.7-liter V8 engine is available on Overland, Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve. Grand Cherokee 4xe is offered in Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve.
Under the Hood
In addition to the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the standard drivetrain of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque, rated to tow up to 6,200 pounds. The other engine choice for the Grand Cherokee is the aforementioned 5.7-liter V8 producing 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, which increases the towing capacity 7,200 pounds. Both engines get teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
4-Wheel-Drive Systems
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a choice of three 4WD systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II. Quadra-Trac I features a single-speed active transfer case that employs multiple sensors to preemptively adjust torque distribution, sending up to 100 percent of power to the front or rear axle. Quadra-Trac II gets a 2-speed transfer case with low-range gear reduction. Quadra-Drive II adds a rear electronic limited-slip differential with the ability to direct torque to individual wheels as necessary. For the first time ever, the Grand Cherokee features front-axle disconnect to reduce drag on the system when four-wheel drive is unneeded.
Quadra-Lift
Jeep’s new Quadra-Lift air suspension features electronic adaptive damping that automatically adjusts to changing road conditions for improved comfort and control. The system can be operated manually and has the ability to lower the Grand Cherokee by 1.8 inches for easy entry and exit, or increase ground clearance to 11.3 inches (Trailhawk) for traversing difficult terrain. At maximum ground clearance, the new SUV can navigate up to 24 inches of water.
Selec-Terrain
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has preset drive modes to optimize the drivetrain, suspension and electronic driver aids for different conditions. The modes include Automatic, Sport, Rock, Snow and Mud / Sand. These settings configure the torque split, braking, steering, suspension, throttle control, transmission, traction control, stability control and anti-lock brakes as needed for various driving conditions.
Grand Cherokee 4xe E Select
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe offers three E Select modes: Hybrid, Electric and eSave. The default Hybrid mode combines power from the 2.0-liter engine and the electric motor and uses battery power first, then adds the 2.0-liter engine after the battery charge has been depleted, or when extra power is needed. In Electric mode, the 4xe will operate with electric power only until the battery is depleted, but will still engage the 2.0-liter engine when the driver requests more power by pushing on the accelerator. In eSave the 4xe will use power from the 2.0-liter engine to save battery charge for later use. The driver can use the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect infotainment system to choose between Battery Save or Battery Charge in eSave mode.
Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
The most capable Grand Cherokee trim level, the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk increases Grand Cherokee’s capability even further with standard all-terrain tires, an integrated off-road camera, Quadra-Lift air suspension with up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance as well as improved approach, departure and breakover angles. New for 2022 is sway bar disconnect for improved articulation and traction over rocks and rough terrain. Selec-Speed Control manages vehicle speed in 4LO by applying engine torque or brakes to maintain a set speed.
Advanced Safety Technology
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers standard safety features that include full-speed collision warning with active braking and pedestrian / cyclist detection, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, active lane management, LaneSense lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist and other features. Available features include a new night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection, intersection collision assist, a drowsy driver detection system, parallel and perpendicular parking assist, traffic-sign recognition and a 360-degree surround view camera system. Available active driving assist uses lane centering with adaptive cruise control for a hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road automated driver assist system.
Uconnect5
The latest version of Jeep’s infotainment system, Uconnect5 is standard equipment on all trim levels of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Five times faster than the previous version, Uconnect 5 uses the Android Auto operating system and offers a long list of innovations. The system can be customized for up to five user profiles and includes not only music preferences but also temperature settings, seating position and mirror placement. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is Amazon Alexa compatibility and dual-phone connectivity.
On-Sale Date
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is scheduled to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2021, followed by the Grand Cherokee 4xe in early 2022.
