2023 GMC Canyon AT4X: First Look

Today GMC debuts the redesigned next-generation midsize Canyon pickup, featuring new aggressive exterior styling, a new interior design and the addition of an AT4X trim for a higher level of off-road capability. First introduced on the full-size 2022 Sierra, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X trim features a factory lift, improved approach angle, exclusive interior and additional equipment.

The entire 2023 GMC Canyon lineup features a redesigned exterior with a factory lift and widened track, advanced technology and new interior design, although the primary focus is the Canyon AT4X. The new front fascia includes LED exterior lighting, relocated fog lights and daytime running lights. The front air dam has been removed for an improved approach angle, and the front axle moved forward for improved proportions and stance.

The 2023 GMC Canyon offers available underbody cameras with front- and rear-facing views, an available head-up display, a digital driver information center, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and available Google Built-In from Google Automotive Services. For the first time an available sunroof is also offered, and a water-tight tailgate storage system is introduced as well.

Drawing inspiration from the Canyon AT4 concept introduced in 2021, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X includes a factory lift and a wider track with standard 33-inch LT 285/70R17 MT tires, Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear electronic locking differentials, underbody skidplates, a transfer case shield, rocker protectors and Baja drive mode. The factory lift gives the Canyon AT4X 10.7 inches of ground clearance and an approach angle of 36.9 degrees.

The 2023 Canyon offers a new interior design as well as premium appointments for each trim level, with no interior the same. At the top of the lineup sits the Canyon Denali with leather trim and laser-etched wood.

The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X interior features a black and white theme with red accents and red seat belts that GMC calls Obsidian Rush with Ceramic White Accents. The Canyon AT4X also includes an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, a customizable 11.3-inch digital touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display and a Bose 7-speaker audio system.

The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X will also be offered with the Edition 1 package at launch, which includes front- and rear-facing underbody cameras with wash functions, an off-road front bumper with a safari bar, a 30-inch off-road light bar up front, a COMEUP winch, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a bed-rail system, a performance front skidplate and an Edition 1 tailgate badge.

The 2023 GMC Canyon will be offered in a simplified configuration via a short bed crew cab configuration and four trim levels: Elevation, AT4, Denali and AT4X. The standard configuration for Elevation, AT4 and Denali is a 2-inch lift, with a 3-inch lift for AT4X.

Across the model range the 2023 GMC Canyon is powered by a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, combined with a Hydra-Matic 8L80 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2023 GMC Canyon offers new drive modes: Normal, Off-Road, Terrain and Tow/Haul, plus the addition of Baja for the new Canyon AT4X. Normal is for balanced everyday driving, Off-Road is tuned for general off-road dynamics, while Terrain is calibrated for low-speed off-roading and rock crawling. Tow/Haul is optimized for heavy loads and towing. Exclusive to Canyon AT4X, Baja is intended for high-speed off-road running.

The standard Canyon Pro Safety Package includes automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking with bicyclist detection, IntelliBeam auto high-beam headlights, a following distance indicator, lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning and forward collision alert.

The available Canyon Driver Safety Plus Package includes rear cross-traffic braking and blind zone steering assist. The available Technology Package adds rear pedestrian alert, adaptive cruise control and HD surround vision. The 2023 GMC Canyon Denali and AT4X include standard Safety Alert Seat.

The 2023 GMC Canyon is scheduled to begin production in early 2023, with the Canyon AT4X arriving in spring 2023. Reservations for 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1 are now open, with the MSRP starting at $63,350. Pricing for other trim levels will be announced later, with 2023 GMC Canyon Elevation expected to start around $40,000.
