2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale
Today Alfa Romeo heralds the expansion of its U.S. lineup with the premiere of the Tonale, a compact crossover that also happens to be the first electrified vehicle for the brand. The Italian automaker describes the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale as the first step of a metamorphosis for Alfa into a new period of electrification and connectivity. The flagship of the new model line is the Plug-In Hybrid Electric version, which has an electric range of more than 30 miles and a total combined power output of 272 horsepower.
2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale
As with all Alfa Romeo models, including the current Giulia sport sedan and midsize crossover Stelvio, the Tonale pays tribute to Alfa Romeo’s rich racing heritage and lineage of sporty cars that possess great driving dynamics. Three Tonale trim levels will be offered: Sprint, Ti and Veloce, and all versions will have all-wheel drive, whether powered by the hybrid drivetrain or a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Design
Alfa Romeo’s newest model closely follows the design of the 2019 Tonale Concept created by the design studio at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. A strong shoulder line, dubbed GT Line, flows from the headlights to the rear of the Tonale; a signature Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille dominates the front of the crossover. The vehicle’s 3+3 headlight design is executed with full LEDs and also has DRLs and dynamic turn signals. At the rear of the Tonale, the taillights employ the same design cues as the headlights and wrap around the rear of the vehicle to create a distinctive light signature.

The compact Tonale is 178.3 inches in overall length, with a width of 72.4 inches and a height of 63.0 inches. By way of comparison Alfa Romeo’s current crossover, the aforementioned midsize Stelvio, is 184.6 inches in length and has a width of 74.9 inches and a height of 66.0 inches.
Under the Hood
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be offered with two drivetrain choices: a first-ever plug-in hybrid for the brand, or a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas-engine option. The Plug-In Hybrid combines a 180-horsepower 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged 4-cylinder engine combined with a high-voltage Belt Starter Generator delivering power to the front wheels, and a 90 kW electric motor powering the rear axle for all-wheel drive capability and a total system output of 272 horsepower. The Tonale’s 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery provides an electric range of more than 30 miles.
Power Option
The other power option for the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine producing 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant gets combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive.
Alfa Romeo Tonale DNA
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale also has a DNA switch that gives the driver a choice of Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency modes. The modes make adjustments to power delivery, steering, braking and suspension. For the PHEV version, the three modes also facilitate changes in power delivery to the rear wheels. In Dual Power / Dynamic mode, the crossover has maximum power delivery from both the gasoline engine and the rear electric motor. In Natural mode, the vehicle has automatic balance between the engine and electric motor to suit driving conditions, and Advanced Efficiency is designed for pure electric use. All three modes will automatically return to hybrid efficiency mode when the battery nears minimum charge.
Alfa Romeo Tonale NFT
According to Alfa Romeo, the Tonale is the first vehicle ever offered with an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) digital certificate based on blockchain technology. Linked to the vehicle at purchase, the NFT can be updated with significant events throughout the Tonale’s life cycle. Alfa Romeo believes this digital history will help protect the Tonale’s residual value.
Driver Focus
Respect for Alfa Romeo history carries through to the Tonale’s driver-focused interior, its telescopic instrument panel and sporty compact steering wheel. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch digital display; the 10.25-inch center display features standard Uconnect5 with Alfa Connect global services that have improved over-the-air capability. The new infotainment system builds on the user experience via the Android Automotive operating system. Wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and wireless charging are all standard.
Tonale Interior
The interior of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is designed to be sporty and high tech, featuring aluminum trim, leather and Alcantara suede. A diamond texture covers the vents, center console and handles. Seat fabrics have a 3D effect in the base trim to a contrasting background color in Alcantara suede and vegan leather on the top trims. The dashboard features a backlit insert that displays a graphic when the panel is off; when activated the graphic gets replaced by a new background.
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems
The Alfa Romeo Tonale will offer Level 2 autonomous driving with new advanced driver-assistance systems such as intelligent adaptive cruise control, lane centering and traffic jam assist. The Tonale is also equipped with automatic emergency braking, driver attention assist, blind-spot detection, rear cross-path detection and a high-resolution 360-degree camera with a dynamic grid.
On-Sale Date
Built at the Giambattista Vico Stellantis Plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, Italy, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will open be available to order in the fourth quarter of 2022. The first vehicles are expected to arrive in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2023.
