2022 Pebble Beach Concours: Tour d’Elegance

Over the past 70 years, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has developed into one of the most prestigious automotive events in the world, this year scheduled for Sunday, August 21, 2022. Every year on a Sunday in August, the 18th fairway in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach hosts many rare and significant cars from around the world in a judged competition that results in one car being named Best of Show. But to kick off the weekend, on the Thursday prior to the prestigious concours, many of those same vehicles take to the streets surrounding Carmel By the Sea and Pacific Coast Highway during the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

This year the Pebble Beach Tour departed from Portola Road in Pebble Beach, turning south on 17-Mile Drive to pass by the famed Lone Cypress before parading in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach and then heading south toward Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Tour joins scenic Highway One along the Pacific Ocean — a classic stretch of California highway the winds through landscape dotted with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. The tour vehicles cross historic Bixby Creek Bridge en route to Big Sur before turning around and heading north back to Pebble Beach.

While the tour offers Concours participants a chance to enjoy a drive through Pebble Beach and down the coast displaying their cars in motion, it also offers viewers a chance to see a subset of vehicles in motion that will be on the lawn on Sunday. With no admission required, automotive enthusiasts pack the starting area of the tour and line the route along 17-Mile Drive and Highway One.

Upon successful arrival back at Pebble Beach, many Tour participants celebrate with champagne before beginning the meticulous (and time-sensitive) process of preparing their cars for the 18th fairway on Sunday. One big advantage to participating in the Tour d’Elegance: if two competitors tie for first in class on Sunday, the tour participant will have an advantage over the non-touring concours entrant. Let’s look at some of amazing machines that cruised the tour route this year.
