 By Arv Voss

OVERVIEW:

Not only does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB250 Class serves up a more affordable SUV in a more practical compact size, it does so while projecting a proper Mercedes image in keeping with its larger stablemates, even in its base form offering. It shares its powertrain and chassis with the more stylish and coupe-like GLA Class lineup. The Tri-star folks make it possible to upgrade the GLB with a host of desirable features and conveniences through a variety of driver assistance option packages. Be forewarned however that each of the available options fare will up the total cost at the register. The GLB Class ranks right up there with likes of the BMW X1 and BMW X2 and the slightly smaller MBZ GLA Class.

MOTIVE FORCE:

The GLB draws its motive force from a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out 221 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 pound feet of torque at 1,800 rpm , delivering energy to front or all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. An ECO Start/Stop feature is included which may be deactivated.

Comfort and Convenience features include: A very spacious cabin interior. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Power Driver seat with lumbar support and memory, split folding rear seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Keyless start, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power liftgate.  The design form of the GLB25 displays a non-boxy, but rather curvy overall form laden with easily recognizable Mercedes styling cues with a more upright design, additional cargo capacity and an available split third row sat. It is attractive and easy on the eyes.

AS TESTED:

My test 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB250 4MATIC SUV came with a Neva Grey and Black MB-Tex Interior. The base sticker read $40,600., while the final tally came to $50,995 After factoring in the optional features and equipment as well ad =s the Destination and Delivery charge

PERFORMANCE:

The GLB250’s 4-cylinder turbocharged four-banger doesn’t deiver a blisteringly fast ride, but it leans to the sporty side of handling and acceleration. It is actually fun to drive with a positive feel and smooth ride quality and the added bonus of adequate practical passenger and cargo space. This all comes with a reasonable fuel economy and a viable warranty program.
