2022 Land Rover Range Rover: First Look

Land Rover introduced the legendary Range Rover more than 50 years ago, and over that time it has developed a reputation as one of the most capable and luxurious SUVs on the market. Today the British company provides a look at what comes next with the introduction of the fifth-generation 2022 Land Rover Range Rover, arriving for the new model year.

“The New Range Rover is a superb manifestation of our vision to create the world’s most desirable luxury vehicles, for the most discerning of customers,” said Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré. “It writes the next chapter in the unique story of pioneering innovation that has been a Range Rover hallmark for more than 50 years,” Bolloré noted.

Even though it’s all new, the fifth-generation Range Rover styling is strikingly familiar. As the company points out, certain lines have always defined a Range Rover — a falling roofline, a strong waistline and rising sill line. These elements can be found in 50 years of Range Rovers, and clearly will continue into the future. That said, this new model has a thoroughly modern look with clean lines enhanced by hidden door handles and headlights that are flush with the grille, flowing seamlessly into the hood.

Perhaps the most noticeable change for the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover resides at the rear of the vehicle, where the taillights facilitate a new tailgate shape. As with previous versions, the new Range Rover has a split tailgate for easier access to the cargo space.

The 2022 Range Rover gets built on Land Rover’s new Modular Longitudinal Architecture, designed to balance weight, strength and stiffness. With these new underpinnings, the fifth-generation Range Rover is up to 50 percent stiffer yet it rides quieter and smoother for improved passenger enjoyment. The new vehicle architecture can accept multiple powertrain options (including hybrids and EVs) and provides enough flexibility for both short- and long-wheelbase versions.

When it comes to market next spring, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover will be available with two engine choices. The SE will have a 3.0-liter turbocharged mild hybrid inline 6 cylinder engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Optional on the SE and standard on the rest of the lineup is a more potent 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 unit that bumps output to 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.

For the 2023 model year, Land Rover plans to add a plug-in hybrid variant to the Range Rover lineup. This extended-range plug-in will combine the brand’s inline 6-cylinder engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission, providing 434 horsepower and up to 62 miles of all-electric driving. In 2024 Land Rover will introduce the first full-electric Range Rover — more details about that will be coming soon.

Adding even more capability to the new Range Rover, all-wheel steering is now standard equipment on all trim levels. The rear axle can provide up to seven degrees of steering angle. At low speeds the rear wheels turn opposite the front wheels to improve maneuverability, creating a turning circle of 36 feet. At higher speeds the wheels turn in phase with the front wheels for improved handling.

All 2022 Land Rover Range Rovers come with full-time intelligent All-Wheel Drive. The iAWD system monitors surface conditions and driver input 100 times per second to distribute torque between the front and rear axles as well as across the rear axle to provide the ultimate in traction and control. An active locking rear differential is also standard, adding to the SUV’s control and capability. The iAWD system can also be configured for specific conditions using Land Rover’s Terrain Response controls.

The new Range Rover employs the brand’s Electric Vehicle Architecture to support the latest in connectivity and infotainment. The Pivi Pro infotainment system uses a 13.1-inch touchscreen and is fully integrated with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Spotify and Amazon Alexa. A 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices is available, as is wireless device charging and up to eight USB ports.

Not only does the new architecture reduce much of the outside noise and vibration, the all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover features a high-tech noise cancellation system. The Meridian sound system uses four accelerometers and microphones outside the vehicle to monitor everything from road vibrations to engine noise, then generates a cancelling signal that broadcasts through all 35 speakers. Part of this system includes the world’s first noise-cancelling head restraint speakers.

Next year Land Rover will offer the first power-assisted doors ever for Range Rover. All four doors can be power operated with integrated hazard detection and anti-pinch control. Doors can even operate at angles up to 10 degrees — useful when venturing off-road.

“The New Range Rover combines supreme on-road and all-terrain capability with electrified propulsion and new levels of connected capability,” said Nick Rogers, executive director of product engineering at Jaguar Land Rover. “In the quest for comfort, we have been obsessed with human science and understanding brain activity to minimize cognitive impact and ensure these advanced technologies work in absolute harmony, creating a truly effortless driving experience. It’s an engineer’s duty to make people’s lives better, and that’s exactly what the New Range Rover will do for you,” Rogers enthused.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover will be available initially in SE and Autobiography trim levels, each available in short or long wheelbase — the latter offering seating for seven. A First Edition based on the Autobiography will be offered in the first year of production, available exclusively in a Sunset Gold Satin finish. Prices start at $104,000 for the SE short wheelbase mild hybrid and range up to $163,500 for the First Edition long wheelbase. A more luxurious Range Rover SV will arrive in 2023.

The fifth-generation 2022 Land Rover Range Rover will be built exclusively at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility — a building once used to produce early series Land Rover vehicles. Orders are being accepted now with deliveries expected to begin in spring 2022.
