2022 Land Rover Defender
Following the return of the Land Rover Defender to the U.S. market last year, the British car company is adding new versions of the Defender for 2022 as well as a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine. Land Rover adds two new special editions to the lineup with the Defender V8 Carpathian Edition and the Defender XS Edition. The Defender 90 lineup also expands for 2022 with X-Dynamic SE and X-Dynamic HSE trim levels. The V8 engine, Carpathian Edition and XS Edition are available for both Defender 90 and longer-wheelbase Defender 110.
Pinnacle of the Defender Family
“The introduction of our V8 powertrain adds a new dimension of driving engagement and off-road capability to Defender. Fast and fun to drive, it represents the pinnacle of the Defender family and is as rewarding on the road as it is capable off it,” said David Hemming, Chief Product Engineer, Jaguar Land Rover. “We’ve also broadened the appeal of the entire Defender lineup with new derivatives, option packs and enhanced connectivity, so there really is a Defender for everyone.”
The new Defender V8 is easily identified with V8-specific exterior details including unique 22-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust outlets, Xenon Blue front brake calipers, unique badging and Shadow Atlas exterior trim. Three exterior color choices are offered: Carpathian Grey, Yulong White and Santorini Black, with a contrasting Narvik Black roof for Carpathian Grey and Yulong White
Defender V8 is outfitted with Ebony Windsor leather seats with Miko Suedecloth and Robustec accents and a unique Ebony tag. The exposed Cross Car Beam on Defender dashboard is finished in Satin Black with leather on the airbag cover and gear selector. The 4-spoke steering wheel is covered with Alcantara and the tactile satin chrome shift paddles behind the steering wheel are unique to Defender V8. Illuminated door sill plates with V8 script finish the look.
Supercharged V8 Power
The addition of the supercharged V8 engine creates the fastest and most powerful production Defender ever offered. The supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine produces 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque, mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission with special transmission tuning. According to Land Rover specs, Defender 90 V8 will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph. The induction and exhaust are tuned to add to the V8 driving experience.
“The 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine further enhances the unique character of the Defender. It sounds fantastic and delivers incredible performance – providing new levels of driver appeal,” said Iain Gray, Senior Manager, Powertrain Advanced Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover. “Our engineering focus has been to optimize powertrain calibration for Defender to deliver both responsive on-road performance and fine control off-road – all without compromising the Defender vehicle’s all-terrain capability and wading ability.”
With the addition of V8 power, Defender suspension is revised to include new spring rates, retuned dampers and larger diameter solid anti-roll bars. A new Electronic Active Rear Differential includes a Yaw Controller to improve handling and stability when cornering.
Defender V8 Carpathian Edition
The exclusive new Defender V8 Carpathian Edition builds on the enhancements of the new Defender V8 to create a top-level Defender variant. Featuring Carpathian Grey paint with the contrasting Narvik Black roof, Carpathian Edition also adds Narvik Black hood and tailgate. Other exterior elements include V8 Carpathian Edition badges, Satin Black tow hooks and Carpathian Gloss front and rear skid plates and grille bar.
Defender XS Edition
The new XS Edition replaces the First Edition with specific exterior and interior details and comprehensive standard equipment. Defender XS Edition features body-color lower cladding, body-color lower wheel arches and 20-inch contrast diamond-turned alloy wheels finished in Satin Grey. Four exterior colors are offered: Silicon Silver, Hakuba Silver, Gondwana Stone and Santorini Black. Inside XS Edition features 12-way heated/cooled front seats finished in Ebony Grained leather and Robust Woven Textile. The Cross Car Beam is finished with a Light Grey power coat brushed finish and the interior includes Extended Leather and illuminated sill plates.
Standard equipment for XS Edition includes Electronic Air Suspension, Adaptive Dynamics, Configurable Terrain Response, 3-zone Climate Control with Rear Cooling Assist, Cabin Air Ionization with PM2.5 filter, Adaptive Cruise Control, ClearSight Rear View mirror and Pivi Pro2 infotainment with 10-speaker Meridian sound system.
