The 2022 BMW M5 CS benefits from a weight reduction program that includes the extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic for a weight reduction of 230 pounds compared to the M5 Competition. Thanks to a bump up to 627 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, the M5 CS will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds (0.2 seconds quicker than the M5 Competition) with a top speed of 190 mph.

In addition to the carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof that is standard on all M5s, the M5 CS achieves additional weight reduction via the following CFRP components: hood with exposed carbon fiber vents, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser and rear spoiler. The engine cover is also made of CFRP with M logo and stripes. Additional weight savings come from a reduction in soundproofing materials.

The signature color for the 2022 M5 CS is Brands Hatch Grey Metallic, with two optional colors offered: Frozen Brands Hatch Grey Metallic and Frozen Deep Green Metallic. The M5 CS stands out thanks to some Gold Bronze accents, including the kidney grille surround, 20-inch light alloy wheels, front fender trim and M5 CS badge on the trunk. The Adaptive LED headlights feature L-shaped light tubes with yellow illumination rather than the standard white, and BMW Individual Shadowline trim accentuates the yellow light.

The 2022 BMW M5 CS is powered by a 4.4-liter M TwinPower turbocharged V8 engine tuned to produce 627 horsepower at 6000 rpm, an increase of 10 horsepower over the M5 Competition. Torque delivery is also improved, producing 553 lb-ft of torque from 1800 to 5950 rpm, which is a wider peak torque range than M5 Competition. The M TwinPower V8 engine gets paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic for short shift times and precise response to accelerator inputs. Drivelogic allows the driver to select between three shift modes: Efficient, Sport or Track, with Track providing the quickest shifts. A transmission oil cooler helps the transmission remain in the best temperature range during track use.

The BMW M xDrive all-wheel-drive system is rear-biased and distributes the available torque between the front and rear wheels via a multi-plate clutch. At the rear, the Active M Differential distributes power between the rear wheels to optimize grip and lateral dynamics. The driver can select between three xDrive modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD. The Dynamic Stability Control system can be adjusted between three settings: DSC ON, M Dynamic Mode and DSC OFF.

The sport exhaust on the 2022 BMW M5 CS is a dual-branch system with electric flaps to control exhaust routing that terminates at quad stainless-steel tips. The exhaust note changes between Efficient, Sport and Sport+, or the M Sound button can be used to quiet the exhaust.
