Today Mercedes-Benz debuts the next-generation flagship S-Class sedan with a new exterior design, upgraded interior luxury and innovative new technologies including the second-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan also premieres two new engines with EQ Boost, a new level of standard Intelligent Drive, more advanced driver-assist systems and advanced LED technology for interactive ambient lighting.

The latest iteration of Mercedes-Benz design language applied to the new S-Class can be called evolutionary with subtle but important updates, starting with a longer hood, reshaped grille and wider headlights. The C-pillars flow into the sculpted rear fenders, exterior door handles are flush with the bodywork, and the reshaped taillights are wider and connected by trim at the upper edges. The new S-Class is longer than its predecessor and also sports a longer wheelbase and wider track.

The focal point of the all-new interior design of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a 12.8-inch OLED center touchscreen for the MBUX infotainment and navigation system. The unit extends up from the center console in front of the dash — a departure from the previous model that had the digital instrument cluster and MBUX screen positioned as a single wide screen under a single hood. The S-Class features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a new steering wheel with capacitive touch control buttons.

The interior is designed to evoke a feeling of more space and more comfort for both front- and rear-seat occupants. The standard front Active Multicontour seats include leather; rapid heating and ventilating; massage; 4-position memory; lumbar support and comfort head restraints. Standard equipment also includes a panorama sunroof; soft-close doors; an air balance package with ionization and active fragrance; power rear sun blinds; a 360-degree surround-view camera with new 3D view assist; 64-color active ambient lighting; and a Burmester 3D surround sound system with sound personalization.

The available 3D instrument cluster in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class provides 3D warning for the driver-assist systems, including a 3D display that provides a view of the vehicle surroundings with 3D images of cars, trucks, buses or motorcycles.

The next-generation MBUX can be operated by voice control, the center touchscreen and/or by touch control buttons on the steering wheel. The verbal cue “Hey Mercedes” brings the system to life, and it has learning capabilities and natural language understanding. When navigation is active, the augmented video for navigation displays a video image of the area and arrows or house numbers get superimposed over the image in the display. An augmented reality head-up display system projects images in the head-up display field.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be offered as the S 500 4MATIC and S 580 4MATIC, both powered via a turbocharged EQ Boost engine combined with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The S 500 4MATIC gets powered from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine producing 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, and the S 580 4MATIC gets powered by a 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 engine producing 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Both variants are equipped with a 48-volt electrical system and an integrated starter-generator that provides EQ Boost and energy recovery. EQ Boost adds an additional 184 lb-ft of torque and 21 horsepower for short periods.

The new S-Class offers available rear-axle steering to improve agility and maneuverability. The system has either 4.5 or 10 degrees of rear steering angle. When equipped with all-wheel steering and 10 degrees of rear steering angle, the turning radius of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is reduced by up to 7 feet, enabling a turning radius of less than 36 feet.

The 2021 S-Class gets fitted with AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable active ADS+ dampers as standard equipment. The 48-volt fully active E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL offers a wide range of handling characteristics that can be set through Drive Mode control, from comfort to performance. The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL responds proactively to driving conditions based on the setting selected by the driver. In Curve mode, the car actively leans into corners to reduce the lateral load on occupants.

In a first for Mercedes-Benz, the new S-Class offers frontal airbags for rear-seat passengers with an innovative tubular structure to rapidly inflate and position the airbag yet also deploy it gently. During severe frontal collisions, the rear airbag can considerably reduce the impact on heads and necks of occupants in the outer rear seats.
