U.S. consumers can always count on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for one thing: the automaker always finds ways to add more power to its vehicles. This has been an unabashedly American formula for muscle cars, pickup trucks and SUVs, and now the company’s off-road division is doing it again with the all-new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. Touting the first factory V8 engine installed in a Wrangler since 1981, the new Rubicon 392 will be the most powerful and capable Wrangler ever directly from the factory.

The last time the Jeep Wrangler came with a V8 was 40 years ago — a 5.0-liter unit that produced a measly 125 horsepower. In those four decades technology has advanced considerably — Wrangler now gets a 6.4-liter 392-cubic-inch V8 that generates 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission. No manual gearbox will be offered with the big V8.

The tuned exhaust note will make certain that all within earshot know there’s a big V8 under the Wrangler’s hood.

“This is the most powerful, quickest, most capable Jeep Wrangler we’ve ever built,” said Jim Morrison, Head of the Jeep brand at FCA North America. “The factory lift and abundant low-end torque from the V-8 makes the Rubicon 392 the king of the hills, whether you’re rock crawling at low speeds or powering up an incline. And, when pavement replaces dirt, Rubicon 392 makes quick work of the road,” Morrison observed.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 retains all its off-road prowess, and it definitely becomes quicker when it hits pavement. The sprint to 60 mph will take 4.5 seconds, and this hot-rod Wrangler will pass the quarter mile in a mere 13 seconds. Top speed is rated at 99 mph — limited by big off-road tires.

When it comes to tackling tough terrain, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is certainly up to the task. Spec sheets report ground clearance at 10.3 inches, and when necessary this high-performance Jeep can ford up to 32.5 inches of water. The wide track and heavy-duty front and rear Dana 44 axles with electronic locking differentials add to the impressive capability. Additionally, the front sway bar can be disconnected electronically for maximum suspension travel.

One reason the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is so quick off the line: the Selec-Trac four-wheel-drive system. The Selec-Trac active transfer case has four modes: 4WD Auto, 4WD High, 4WD Low and Neutral — the latter allows the Jeep to be flat towed (all four wheels on the ground).

The Rubicon 392 also has a selectable Off-Road Plus with Sand and Rock modes that adjusts throttle, transmission and traction control for the best performance off-road, whether climbing rocks or running at high speeds through the desert.

To maximize the powerful V8 under the hood, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 gets upgraded frame rails, front upper control arms and cast-iron steering knuckles designed to handle the big increase in torque. Additional performance improvements are heavy-duty brakes as well as tuned high-performance Fox aluminum monotube shocks.

This high-powered Wrangler gets 392 badging so others know what’s going on beneath this Jeep’s hood. The 392 also stands out thanks to a 40-mm raised hood with a functional air scoop taken from the Gladiator Mojave, as well as a grille designed for better airflow (also borrowed from Gladiator).

The Rubicon 392 gets lifted 2.0 inches higher than the standard Wrangler (1.0 inch higher than the standard Rubicon). Not only does this additional altitude provide a more aggressive stance, it is necessary to package the large V8 engine.
