2021 Jaguar XF: First Look

Only a few weeks ago, Jaguar removed the wraps from a refreshed F-PACE sport-utility vehicle, and now the British marque follows that up with an equally new 2021 Jaguar XF luxury sedan. This extensive update of the XF includes new styling inside and out, as well as performance upgrades and new features. With sales steadily dropping since the current generation XF went on sale, Jaguar is banking on this major refresh to breathe some life back into this elegant sedan.

Many new design elements of the XF are shared with the F-PACE — the two vehicles now have a much closer family resemblance than in the past. Most noticeable is a larger grille featuring a mesh design with a Noble Chrome finish. Slim LED headlights sporting new “Double J” signature running lights flank the grille, and larger air intakes in the lower grille give the XF a wider, more aggressive stance.

“The significant new elements of the XF create a more dynamic stance for the car, but the small details are just as important,” said Jaguar Exterior Design Director Adam Hatton. “Bringing the heritage-inspired detailing to the grille and headlights adds that touch of depth and luxury with a link to Jaguar’s unparalleled past, while the Leaper emblem on the side vents is instantly recognizable and provides an added visual flourish,” Hatton noted. These design changes also move the XF further upscale, giving it more social distance, as it were, from the entry-level XE.

Even with the new sedan’s noteworthy exterior changes, the major design improvements of the 2021 Jaguar XF can be found inside. Open pore wood veneers, aluminum accents and other premium soft-touch materials elevate the XF’s level of luxury, and overall the cabin has more modern styling. The lines of the dash are horizontal rather than the previous-generation’s curved style, in what Jaguar designers refer to as a “piano lid.” Vents now sit at the top of the dash to provide crisp lines and give the interior a wider look. Jaguar also moves away from the round gear selector, replacing it with an all-new stylish JaguarDrive Selector.

One of the most significant highlights of the 2021 Jaguar XF resides at the center of the dashboard — an all-new 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen display encased in magnesium alloy. This bright and easy-to-read display is the primary interface for Jaguar’s advanced infotainment system called Pivi Pro.

Accompanying the center screen is a new available 12.3-inch HD driver’s display that can be completely configured to show digital gauges, infotainment details or the navigation system in full screen. The 2021 Jaguar XF also gets a sportier new steering wheel with nicely integrated controls.

Employing a dedicated power source for instant startup, the Pivi Pro infotainment system is ready for use the instant a driver starts the vehicle. Pivi Pro offers a range of advance features including the ability to simultaneously connect to two phones via Bluetooth, either of which can be answered while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system can be connected to Microsoft or Google calendars to not only keep schedules available, but automatically add addresses of appointments into the nav system.

The 2021 Jaguar XF employs Jaguar’s advanced Electronic Vehicle Architecture, or EVA 2.0. The EVA 2.0 system uses dual-sim technology with two LTE modems to provide over-the-air software updates as well as power the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. Dual modems help eliminate coverage blackouts, allowing the system to perform multiple streaming functions simultaneously.

The burgeoning list of standard features for the 2021 Jaguar XF includes wireless phone charging, keyless entry, a 3-D surround camera view and active road noise cancellation, which uses opposite-phase sound waves to cancel out road noise. The quieter cabin becomes a refuge to enjoy the standard Meridian 12-speaker sound system. Jaguar will also offer the latest version of its wearable Activity Key, which can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle without needing to carry the key fob.

“The luxurious all-new interior of the XF delivers a calming sense of occasion every time you step into it,” said Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson. “From its driver focused cockpit to the enhanced tactility, comfort and convenience, the interior has been fully transformed,” Thomson observed.

Jaguar will offer the new XF with two turbocharged engine choices. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit producing 246 horsepower will be standard equipment for the rear-wheel-drive XF P250 S and SE, while a more potent 296-horsepower engine will motivate the all-wheel-drive SE and R-Dynamic trims. Both engines get teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
