2019 Detroit Auto Show: 2020 Toyota Supra

Toyota enthusiasts and sports car fans in general have waited somewhat patiently as Toyota teased the return of the Supra over the past year — first with the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, followed by the a heavily camouflaged prototype attacking the hillclimb circuit at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed last July. That wait is nearly over as the 2020 Toyota Supra debuts in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show. The car is scheduled to go on sale in summer 2019.

The first new Toyota Supra for the U.S. market in more than 20 years, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is also the first Global GR Model developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing, Toyota’s global racing program that won both the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 2018 World Rally Championship. Both the design and the configuration of the new Supra draw from two iconic Toyota cars from the past: the 1967 2000 GT and the fourth-generation 1993–2002 Supra with its long hood, short wheelbase, low center of gravity and rear-wheel drive.

Enthusiasts’ hope for a new Supra was ignited in 2014 by the FT-1 concept, designed at Toyota’s Calty design center in California as a look at a future sports car from Toyota. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra design evolved from the FT-1 concept, and the refined design reflects a relationship to the fourth-generation Supra as well as the Toyota 2000 GT. The front fascia was inspired by the fourth-generation Supra with a prominent center grille flanked by large air intakes. The double-bubble roof design pays tribute to the 2000 GT while reducing drag by lowering the center of the roof without impacting headroom.

At the front, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra’s six-lens LED headlights incorporate daytime running lights and turn signals, creating a unique lighting signature for the new car. The circular rear combination lights include the taillights, brake lights and turn signals with LED backup lights located at the center of the bumper.

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is powered by a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine — another nod to the fourth-generation Supra, which offered a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder unit. If the engine looks familiar (as well as the gear shifter and other components), note that the Supra was developed in collaboration with BMW — a reliable source for a powerful, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine. The 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbo engine in the Supra produces 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque with peak torque available at low engine speeds. The only transmission offered is an 8-speed automatic with standard paddle shifters for manual shifting. Toyota expects the Supra to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and top track speed will be limited to 155 mph.

The driver can choose from two drive modes: Normal or Sport, which is a more responsive and engaging drive experience. Sport mode reduces traction control and stability control intervention, and adds sharper throttle response, increased steering weight, more crisp transmission shifts, more aggressive active differential tuning and increased exhaust sound.

The new Supra has a standard active differential with an electric motor and multiplate clutches to control torque distribution from side-to-side. The active differential can control the variable locking from zero to 100 percent under both acceleration and braking to help control both understeer and oversteer.

For handling and performance, the Supra has high structural rigidity, a low center of gravity and a 50:50 weight distribution. The front suspension is a new double-joint spring-struck design, and the rear suspension features a multi-link five-arm design with both aluminum and steel components. Toyota specified the spring, shock and stability control system tuning to give the Supra desired handling characteristics. Adaptive Variable Suspension is standard with instant damping force adjustment in Normal and Sport modes.

The GR Supra features standard 19-inch wheels with wider rear wheels, fitted with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires: 255/35R19 on the front and 275/35R19 at the rear. Large disc brakes are fitted at all four corners, with 13.7-inch rotors and 4-piston Brembo calipers at the front.

2020 Toyota SupraDriver-Oriented Interior
As expected in a performance sports car, the 2020 Supra features a driver-oriented cockpit and an interior with grand touring comfort and convenience. The asymmetrical center console contains driving controls that surround the driver and also provides a right knee bolster. The instrument panel’s high-definition color display contains a single larger meter with driving information, with audio or available navigation information to the right. Racing-inspired seats include integrated head restraints and bolsters in the shoulder area for lateral support. The Supra 3.0 offers Alcantara seats and a 3.0 Premium grade includes heated leather seats.

2020 Toyota SupraStandard Equipment
The 2020 Supra includes standard comfort and convenience features such as keyless smart entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, power-folding mirrors, and a leather-wrapped steering. The Supra 3.0 features a 6.5-inch display that can be operated by a rotary controller on the console and has Bluetooth and iPod capability. The 3.0 Premium grade receives an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, Supra Connect telematics services, wireless Apple CarPlay, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system and wireless phone charging.
