Run to the Sun — Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

NWAPA

Imagine driving a very cool new car for a distance between 9 to 25 miles, getting out and then into another very cool car for another 9 to 25 mile leg and then repeating the same routine through 23 cars in a two day period.

Welcome to the 2010 NWAPA (Northwest Automotive Press Association) Run to the Sun held recently in western Washington.? After 23 cars and more than 450 miles of smiles, here are our quick impressions of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

There is very little about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG that is not exotic from the trademark gullwing doors to the aluminum space frame body to the powerful 563-hp, 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine to the $185,750 price tag. ?Unless you live in some very wealthy community this is a car you may only see on the road once a year, and getting to spend some time behind the wheel was a rare treat indeed.? The SLS is sophisticated in a very Mercedes-Benz-like way ? impeccably finished, comfortable (although the cabin is a little on the tight side) and extremely fast.? Fast comes in many forms, though, from brute force to something like the SLS which is smooth and precise with a slightly muted exhaust roar and the sensation of moving forward at warp speed.? Zero to 60 mph takes only 3.7 seconds, and on a track, the top speed is limited to 197 mph.
